Anxiety, Stress, and Chronic Pain: How They Interact

I call it "painxiety"

Living with fibromyalgia or chronic pain means living in a body that is highly sensitive to stress. Anxiety and ongoing stress do not just affect mood. They often show up physically, especially as muscle tightness, increased pain, and more frequent flares.

When the nervous system is under stress, the body tends to stay in a guarded state. Muscles tighten, breathing becomes shallow, and recovery slows down. Over time, this constant tension can amplify pain signals and make daily symptoms harder to manage.

I know this firsthand. I live with chronic pain myself, and I have learned how closely my stress levels and pain levels are connected. When anxiety starts to build, my body responds quickly. Muscles tighten, pain increases, and focus becomes harder.

Over time, I have learned to recognize these early stress signals and respond sooner rather than pushing through. One tool I personally use during stressful periods is a CBG  sublingual oil. For me, it has become part of a broader routine focused on staying regulated and functional throughout the day.

I approach CBG as a wellness support, not a treatment. In my experience, it helps me feel calmer, more clear-headed, and better able to get through demanding days without adding to the cycle of tension and overwhelm. Everyone’s response is different, but learning what supports your nervous system can make a meaningful difference.

Managing anxiety and stress is not about eliminating them completely. It is about noticing how they affect your body and building supportive habits that help reduce unnecessary strain. For people living with fibromyalgia and chronic pain, this awareness can be an important step toward making daily life more manageable.
